Flying Fox Running
Multi Terrain races, half is 2 laps of the 10k course
Run for the Romans 5 or 10k and the Ham Hill Sunset Half and 10k races. These races happen in the surroundings of Ham Hill Country Park just outside of Yeovil in South Somerset and near the villages of Odcombe, Montecute, Stoke-sub-Hamdon and Norton-sub-Hamdon. The country park forms an excellent backdrop for running in thanks to it’s iron age hill fort, modern and ancient quarries, woods and numerous historic sites and monuments. Our race HQ is at a new location this year. The Lime Kiln car park but like last summer we do have parking at Butchers field.
Ham Hill is named for the Ham stone which is quarried from it. A distinctive golden limestone that looks amazing in the setting sun. The race takes in two areas of the former iron age hill fort. The most fortified part is near the war memorial and our race takes in this area and it’s ramparts. The race also takes in some of this residential area running around the meadows that now cover these areas. The remains of a Roman garrison and villa are in the area though hard to discern. More recent ruins and monuments are clearly visible on the route.
27th June from 4.00 pm for 5 and 10k Run for the Romans Races,
6:30pm for the half and 7:30pm for the 10k
The race is on a long 10k course with 2 laps for the half marathon. The 5k just uses a part of the lap. All distances are very approximate and we haven't quite finished refining the course to account for the new finish location. We will be starting in the same areas though.
The terrain varies from small bits of tarmac, a lot of gravel paths as well as mud paths some exposed rocks and a fair amount of grass. With the time of year you might well get away with road shoes but the grip of comfortable trail shoes is probably a good idea. Watch the group Facebook page for updates in the week of the race.
You will need to wear a head torch on the second lap of the half marathon if you are going to be running after sunset at 9:25pm. For which you need to be able to start the second lap before 7:55pm (1h 25 mins into race).
All finishers will receive a finishers medal.
Age limits 13 and above for the 5k, 16 and above for both 10k’s, 17 and above for the half marathon.
